I think the confusion lies around the word “terminal.” Starlink sent internet service terminals to swing states in the US with questionable internet, not voting terminals. As far as I can see, they don’t make voting machines (though that would be terrifying and is probably up next). I wasn’t able to see whether the Canadian government relied on them for internet service surrounding the election.

I don’t know how RFK Jr. is using it, but it almost certainly makes no sense.
Edit: oh, voluntourism! I knew there was a term for it

It felt like it weighed about 250 kg, but it was actually pretty manageable in the snow because it was so easy to get back in control once you’d lost it.
idiomaddict@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Trump says US kids may get ‘2 dolls instead of 30,’ but China will suffer more in a trade war1·22 hours agoI once bought a 1990 Nissan Sentra for $700 in 2013, then sold it ten months later for $700. I had to pay for gasoline and oil, but that’s it. It was a totally functional car, it was just absolutely tiny and didn’t have airbags, so I didn’t really want to keep driving it.
idiomaddict@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Trump says US kids may get ‘2 dolls instead of 30,’ but China will suffer more in a trade war1·22 hours agoThe last time I was looking (~6 years ago), banks were unwilling to offer and very judgmental about my request for a loan on a used car. They said loans were for new cars and the bank isn’t a replacement for a little financial know-how. I only went to two banks and one credit union, because I got tired of being condescended to, but the dealership said that they hadn’t heard of used car loans from a bank before (could be a lie).
And he no longer owned the company afterward, so it’s kind of like losing his job. Or just spectacularly quitting.

You do need sugars for either though, afaik, because the yeast has to eat something either way.
idiomaddict@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Apocalypse movies in the near future won't have survivors scavaging abandoned cars.2·2 days agoWait, you can’t make ethanol from wood? I guess that would make sense, because otherwise you’d see a lot more wood liqueurs, I’ve only ever heard of alcohol made from maple syrup, birch, and pine (but that last one was from a rural Austrian town and they aren’t allowed to sell it elsewhere, so it might be a little more poisonous than the others). This is going to be a rabbit hole.
Edit: you can, but it’s not the traditional way of turning wood into alcohol, and an efficient method has only recently been developed.
idiomaddict@lemmy.worldto Curated Tumblr@sh.itjust.works•not a metaphor for anythingEnglish9·2 days agoSorry for the mostly tangent, but I guess I’m also more sensitive about terms than I realized.
My sister got married after dating her husband for about six months. On the day of the wedding, my new BIL started calling me “sis” even though it was the third time we’d met.
I actually like him quite a lot now and I’m very glad that they’re married, but woof did that rub me the wrong way. I don’t think anyone has ever called me sis before or since with the exception of drunk women in the bathroom (and I have, all told, eight siblings, step siblings, and siblings in law).
idiomaddict@lemmy.worldto Curated Tumblr@sh.itjust.works•not a metaphor for anythingEnglish12·2 days agoI call my husband bro, and while he is a dude, he’s definitely not my brother (also he calls me bro and I’m a woman ish).
But yeah, talking to people in a way they dislike is making the world unhappier for no reason.

There are very few foods people can actually eat without any form of processing, and the ones that we can offer basically no protein, fat, or complex carbohydrates, mostly just sugar, fiber and vitamins (not necessarily bad, but you need more)
