  • Socially, the plan aims to engineer a “new baby boom” by providing baby bonuses to encourage family formation.

A central feature of the proposal is providing “regulatory relief” to spur innovation and development. According to draft legislation, these cities could be exempt from major federal laws, including:
    The Internal Revenue Code
The Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act
The Fair Labor Standards Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA)

The draft legislation suggests that residents of Freedom Cities would be prohibited from voting in state elections, and the cities would be operated and maintained by the developers who won the initial bid. Political consultant Gil Duran predicted these would be “cities where the owners […] have all the power and everyone else has no power.”

This reads like something out of a comically bad dystopian novel. Such freedom! This is truly the dream, folks!

  • Even as a white guy with citizenship, coming back into the US was a pain in the ass 10 and 20 years ago. And my friends with student visas and green cards were occasionally hassled for no clear reasons. I can’t imagine how stressful that experience would be now, especially for anyone without a US passport or who lands on the wrong end of the color card in that Peter Griffin meme.

Product R&D engineer here. I have a product manager who only knows how to give one piece of feedback: make it smaller and slimmer. What requirement is driving this? Can’t say. What user need are we trying to address? No idea. But smaller=better for some reason.
