Blue Lock is famously powerpoint animation, but it actually works well. I think of it as an animated manga panels, kind of like 60s Thor/Hulk/Sub Mariner/Captain America cartoons. Actually Blue Lock does throw in some sakuga at appropriate times.
If you really want to see bad animation, watch Teogonia episode 1, but I don’t want to trash it too much because the art and story have their merits.
Blue Locks animation fucking sucks and was a result of poor management and unrealistic time constraints. That the final result is even watchable, given the production woes, may be a credit to the poor animators and editors, but it doesn’t “work well”. The existence of worse animation doesn’t make it better either. A minimal animation style can work, if it was planned from the beginning, but that wasn’t the case with Blue Lock.
Unfortunately Studio MAPPA fired the S1 director Ryu Nakayama already…
Which was very unfortunate, because S1 was a masterpiece…
All because the Japanese audience didn’t care for the “westernized” direction
I got the impression that it was mostly superfans who didn’t like some story changes.
Similar to how the TBATE anime adaptation is currently getting trashed by the source light novel’s superfans.
Just looked it up. Wow the animation is almost as bad as blue lock s2.
No, TBATE is actually just fine.

I posted an example of the weird combination of good art/bad animation in Teogonia episode 2
